Understanding the Basic Rules of Football (Soccer)

Football, also known as soccer in some countries, is the most popular sport in the world. It's fast-paced, exciting, and played in nearly every nation. While the game seems simple—two teams trying to score goals—the rules that govern it are essential to ensure fair play and competition.

1. The Objective of the Game

The main goal in football is to score more goals than the opposing team within 90 minutes of play. A standard match is divided into two halves of 45 minutes each, with a 15-minute halftime break.

2. The Players

Each team must have 11 players on the field, including one goalkeeper. A match cannot continue if a team has fewer than 7 players.

3. Starting the Game

The game begins with a kick-off from the center circle. Kick-offs also restart play after a goal is scored and at the start of the second half.

4. Offside Rule

A player is offside if they are nearer to the opponent's goal line than both the ball and the second-last defender when the ball is passed to them—unless they’re in their own half. This rule prevents players from "goal-hanging."

5. Fouls and Misconduct

A foul occurs when a player kicks, pushes, holds, or tackles another player unfairly. Yellow cards are given as warnings. Red cards mean the player is sent off and cannot be replaced.

6. Free Kicks and Penalties

When a foul happens, the referee may award a free kick or a penalty kick, depending on where the foul occurred. Penalty kicks are given for fouls inside the penalty box.

7. Throw-ins, Goal Kicks, and Corner Kicks

A throw-in restarts play when the ball goes out over the sideline.

A goal kick is awarded when the attacking team last touches the ball before it crosses the goal line.

 A corner kick is awarded when the defending team last touches the ball before it goes out over the goal line.

8. Referee and VAR

The referee controls the game, makes decisions on fouls, and ensures rules are followed. In major leagues, VAR (Video Assistant Referee) helps review decisions on goals, red cards, and penalties.
